Artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize the way skin cancer is detected, according to a recent study conducted by the University of Essex and Check4Cancer.
The study introduced a new AI framework called the C4C risk score, which has shown promising results in identifying 85% of skin cancer cases when used in conjunction with current assessment methods. This innovative framework aims to expedite the triage process for patients and reduce waiting times by detecting non-suspicious lesions early on.
Developed in collaboration with Anglia Ruskin University and Addenbrookes Hospital, this AI framework relies solely on patient data for its analysis. Lead researcher Dr. Haider Raza noted that the framework has demonstrated a high sensitivity in distinguishing suspicious skin lesions from non-suspicious ones based on metadata alone.
By analyzing a vast amount of metadata from over 25,000 patients who visited Check4Cancer’s skin cancer diagnosis clinics between 2015 and 2022, the AI framework can predict the likelihood of skin cancer based on descriptions of skin lesions and personal characteristics. With a balanced accuracy of 71%, the C4C risk score has shown to outperform existing assessment methods.
Chief Medical Officer at Check4Cancer, Professor Gordon Wishart, highlighted the potential benefits of this new AI model when combined with skin lesion images. He emphasized that this combined approach could lead to improved outcomes for patients by enhancing the accuracy of skin cancer diagnosis.
