A famous actor popped by Colchester for the opening night of a play based on a best-selling book. Alison Steadman swung by the Mercury Theatre in Balkerne Gate to catch The Da Vinci Code on Thursday night.

Alison, known for her role as Pam Shipman in Gavin & Stacey, also strutted her stuff as Mrs. Bennet alongside Colin Firth in the TV adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. She even made an appearance in the Robbie Williams biopic, Better Man, last year.

Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code trails Professor Robert Langdon and cryptologist Sophie Neveu as they gallivant across Europe. The play adaptation was crafted by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel.

The star-studded cast for the Mercury Theatre premiere includes Sherry Baines, Joe Bannister, Philip Bretherton, Richard Clews, Joshua Griffin, Georgia-Mae Myers, Louise Mai Newberry, Anthony Ofoegbu, and Joe Pitts.

Award-winning director Chelsea Walker, who snagged the Sir Peter Hall Director Award in 2017, is at the helm of the production.

On Friday, the audience got the boot from the Mercury Theatre for some reason. Maybe a fire drill or a rogue squirrel, who knows?

The Da Vinci Code will be gracing the Mercury Theatre stage until May 24, so make sure to snag a ticket before it’s gone for good.
