Audrey Tyrrell, a 12-year-old girl from Dovercourt, Essex, has recently been diagnosed with Usher syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects both hearing and vision. This condition, which has no cure, is caused by specific recessive mutations and can lead to blindness in severe cases, affecting three to six out of every 100,000 people.

In response to Audrey’s diagnosis, nearly £5,000 has been raised for a special “visual memories” list that includes experiences the family would like Audrey to have before she loses her eyesight. Some of the items on this list include climbing Mount Snowdon, visiting the Tate Modern Gallery, and seeing the Statue of Liberty.

To help make some of these dreams a reality, a black-tie event was organized at the Waterfront in Dovercourt, raising £4,837 for Audrey’s cause. Audrey, who attended the event in a classic Daimler car, expressed her joy and gratitude, feeling like a “celeb and princess all rolled into one.”

Toni Smith, 66, one of the event organizers, shared that Audrey and her family had a wonderful time at the event. Audrey had a choice of three dresses to wear, making her feel like she was in heaven. Her best friend was also present, adding to the specialness of the night.

During the event, Audrey’s mum, Tracy, delivered an emotional speech, sharing Audrey’s journey since birth. The family also received a surprise gift of a helicopter ride, arranged by a friend of Toni’s daughter who attended the event and wanted to create a special memory for Audrey.

Various local businesses in Tendring came together to make the event a success. The red carpet was donated by Sharon Wood, the classic Daimler car was provided by Rob Ruffell, and the balloons were sculpted and donated by Amy of Bespoke Balloons in Clacton. Les Nichol hosted an auction, and the flowers were created by Amy Giles.

Special thanks were extended to Eddie Clifton, the owner of The Waterfront, for generously providing the venue for the event. The outpouring of support and generosity from the community has helped bring some light and joy to Audrey and her family during this challenging time.
