Police bodycam footage recently revealed the disturbing moment when Virginia McCullough, a 36-year-old woman from Essex, was arrested for the brutal murder of her parents. The heinous crimes took place in June 2019, when Virginia poisoned her father, John McCullough, 70, with crushed prescription medication mixed into his drinks. The following day, on June 20, she savagely beat her 71-year-old mother, Lois McCullough, with a hammer and fatally stabbed her.
McCullough went to great lengths to conceal the bodies of her parents within their home in Pump Hill, Great Baddow, where she continued to live as if nothing had happened. It wasn’t until 2023 that the bodies were discovered, thanks to the diligence of Essex Police, who launched an investigation prompted by concerns raised by the couple’s GP. Upon visiting the McCulloughs’ residence, officers grew suspicious and eventually uncovered the remains of John and Lois.
Prior to the discovery of the bodies, Virginia had spun a web of lies, constantly fabricating stories about her parents’ whereabouts, canceling family plans, and falsely claiming her parents were unwell or on extended vacations. The released bodycam footage captures the moment of Virginia’s arrest on September 15, 2023, as Essex Police officers, armed with tasers, stormed her home and placed her in handcuffs. In a chilling exchange with the officers, Virginia admitted to her crimes, acknowledging that she knew this day would come and resigned herself to facing the consequences.
Virginia McCullough eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of murder in Chelmsford Crown Court on June 4, 2024. Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby of Essex Police described her as an “intelligent manipulator” who callously took the lives of her parents. The McCullough family, in a joint statement, paid tribute to John and Lois and expressed gratitude to the police for their diligent work in bringing their daughter to justice.
On October 11, Virginia faced sentencing at Chelmsford Crown Court, where it was revealed that she had accrued significant debts using her parents’ credit cards and continued to spend their pensions even after their deaths. She was handed a minimum sentence of 36 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
