Witham is on track to welcome its first McDonald’s and KFC restaurants as plans for a new retail park gain momentum. The proposed retail park, which includes drive-thru restaurants and shops, was introduced by Churchmanor Estates in May 2023.
The development plans feature five units, including three retail units, a drive-thru restaurant unit, a drive-thru coffee shop unit, and an electric vehicle charging station. McDonald’s and Costa are expected to occupy two of the units, while KFC is slated for one of the combined building units.
Situated on Gershwin Boulevard in the southwestern part of Witham, the retail park is conveniently located near the A12. Nearby establishments include an Aldi retail store, Marstons Public House, Saxon Arms, and a children’s Day Care Nursery.
While the proposal has garnered both objections and support during a public consultation, the planning statement asserts that the environmental impacts of the development, such as noise and traffic, are deemed acceptable. Supporters of the project view it as a valuable opportunity for job creation and a positive addition to the town.
Despite concerns raised about potential noise levels, anti-social behavior, and traffic congestion, the employment, economic, and social benefits of the retail park are believed to outweigh any drawbacks. The application is on track for approval, with a planning meeting scheduled for next week to discuss the plans in further detail.
