An investigation has been launched into a fire that occurred at a block of flats in South London today. The fire broke out in two flats on the ninth and 10th floors of the building in Rosenthal Road, Catford. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded to the scene with up to 70 firefighters to tackle the blaze. Thankfully, the fire has been extinguished and there were no reported injuries.
Over 50 calls were made to report the fire, as black smoke was seen billowing from the building. Videos posted on social media show flames burning on the balcony of one of the flats. As a result of the fire, Rushey Green is closed between Rosenthal Road and Honley Road.
This incident comes on the same day as the release of a report from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, which marks seven years since a tragic fire in West London claimed the lives of 72 people. The London Fire Brigade provided an update stating that ten fire engines from various stations responded to the fire and that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
It is crucial for authorities to determine the cause of the fire to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Fire safety measures and protocols should be reviewed and reinforced to ensure the safety of residents in high-rise buildings. The community affected by the fire will also need support in the aftermath of this traumatic event.
Firefighters continue to work at the scene, and people are advised to avoid the area until the situation is fully resolved. The quick response and efforts of the London Fire Brigade are commendable in containing the fire and preventing any injuries. It is a reminder of the importance of fire safety and preparedness in residential buildings to protect lives and property.
