St Benedict’s Catholic College in Colchester recently wowed audiences with a dazzling production of Bugsy Malone, showcasing the immense talent of its students. The week-long performances brought together 120 students who poured their hearts and souls into creating a show that was described as “slick, smooth, and very professional.”
The students not only took on acting roles but also formed the live band, managed sound and lighting, and even tackled stagehand duties. With just two teachers behind the scenes, the students truly shined as they delivered a show that left families and friends cheering, clapping, and laughing uproariously, especially during scenes involving splurge guns and silly string.
Sinéad Orme, a music teacher at the school and one of the key figures behind the production, expressed her delight at the incredible performances. She shared, “It’s been brilliant, really, really good. They have really gone beyond our expectations. The students are all so happy making memories they will have for the rest of their lives, and they’ve loved it.”
This production marked Sinéad and drama teacher Claire Davies’ second collaboration since reintroducing extracurricular activities post-pandemic. Sinéad noted the joy of witnessing the students’ growth in independence and ownership throughout the project, allowing her to sit back and enjoy the show while basking in their achievements.
The school also extended its reach by hosting a matinee performance for nearby primary schools, St Thomas More’s and St Teresa’s. The younger pupils were awestruck by the whimsical splurge guns that shot whipped cream across the stage, adding an element of surprise and delight to the show.
Sinéad emphasized the significance of creative expression and community within the production, stating, “I think the general highlight is to see the students be able to express themselves creatively musically and in every art form. Bugsy Malone is about friendship and community, and that’s what we are at St Benedict’s—a really nice community.”
Deputy Head John Callaghan expressed immense pride in the cast, technical crew, and musical team for their dedication and enthusiasm in bringing the most ambitious production in the college’s history to life. He highlighted the invaluable experience gained by the students, hoping that this performance would serve as a stepping stone in their theatrical journey.
