In a heartwarming tale of new beginnings and community spirit, partners Diane Hampson and Terri Ryland have taken over the reins at the beloved New Bell Inn in Harwich. This historic 18th-century pub has been transformed into a vibrant hub where locals come together to share stories, enjoy live music, and partake in quiz nights.
Restoration and Renewal
Driven by their love for Harwich and its tight-knit community, Diane and Terri saw an opportunity to breathe new life into the New Bell Inn when it went up for sale 15 months ago. Diane, already retired, and Terri, with a background in marketing and tourism, decided to embark on this exciting venture together.
They have meticulously restored the pub, separating the two bars, adding mirrors to brighten the interior, and installing cozy wood burners to create a welcoming atmosphere. Their goal was to make patrons feel like they were stepping into their own living room, creating a space that exudes warmth and charm.
Community Engagement and Giving Back
The New Bell Inn has become a gathering place for the community, hosting Morris dance groups, live music on Sundays, and monthly quiz nights. Last December, guests were treated to a special performance of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, adding a festive touch to the holiday season.
In addition to providing entertainment, Diane and Terri are dedicated to giving back to the community. They are currently fundraising for a defibrillator for the pub and support local charities like The Electric Palace independent cinema. Their commitment to community involvement goes hand in hand with their passion for offering a space where people can connect and unwind.
