A significant project to build council homes for elderly residents in Colchester has recently been completed after four years of development. The Elfreda House project, costing £9.5 million, located in Iceni Way, Shrub End, was demolished and rebuilt during this time. The official opening took place at 10 am this morning, with councillor Paul Smith, the portfolio holder for housing, and Mayor Lesley Scott-Boutell in attendance, along with tenants and staff.
The sheltered accommodation consists of 36 self-contained one and two-bedroom flats, with 22 of them already occupied. Each flat is equipped with a spacious bathroom, kitchen, and living room. The new Elfreda House offers communal spaces, rooftop terraces, lounges, mobility scooter stores, and even a hair salon, providing a comfortable and convenient living environment for its residents.
One of the tenants, 84-year-old Malcolm Wood, expressed his satisfaction with the new accommodations. Originally from Aberdeen, Scotland, Wood has been living in Colchester for years after working overseas. He shared, “It’s wonderful, I am very happy on the second floor here, I am still working as a journalist, I couldn’t wish for anything better.”
Another tenant, 82-year-old Valerie Willis, who moved in recently after living in a three-bedroom home for 49 years, also praised the new living space. She mentioned, “I feel so safe here, it’s lovely, a beautiful flat, it is unbelievable. The staff are wonderful, they are there at the ring of the bell, I can’t find any faults with this place.”
Councillor Paul Smith expressed his delight at the completion of the project, emphasizing the high standard of accommodation provided for elderly residents in Colchester. He highlighted the various facilities available, including hobby rooms and a hairdressing facility, making it an ideal place for those looking to downsize from larger family homes.
The Elfreda House project not only offers comfortable living spaces but also fosters a sense of community among its residents. With modern amenities and a supportive staff, the new council homes aim to provide a fulfilling and secure environment for the elderly population in Colchester.
