Colchester’s food scene is a delightful journey around the world, and one of the city’s top spots is the Japanese-inspired restaurant, Koryu. Formerly located near Scheregate Steps in St John’s Walk, Koryu has now moved closer to the city center next to the George Hotel, attracting food lovers with its diverse menu and promising 4.7-star rating on Google reviews.
During a recent visit on a serene Monday morning, the welcoming staff swiftly seated us, and we delved into the menu filled with a plethora of options, including vegan and vegetarian choices. For starters, we savored the vegetable gyoza and chicken karaage, paired with a refreshing lime soda infused with elderflower and strawberries—a delightful combination of flavors that set the tone for the meal.
The gyoza boasted a perfect crunch and flavorful filling, while the marinated chicken karaage came with an exquisite dipping sauce that left us craving more. Our main courses arrived promptly, featuring the beef don—a bowl of Japanese rice topped with beef, kimchi, onion, and sweet dashi sauce, along with the Pumpkin Katsu Teriyaki Hirata Buns.
The tender beef, accompanied by the spicy-sweet kimchi and sauce, paired harmoniously with the generous portion of rice. The steamed buns, filled with a crispy fried pumpkin patty, onions, and savory teriyaki sauce, offered a delightful contrast of textures and flavors. To complement the meal, we opted for authentic Japanese plum wine, which provided a sweet and mellow finish to our dining experience.
In addition to its delectable offerings, Koryu participates in the “Too Good To Go” project, allowing patrons to purchase unsold food at discounted prices towards the end of the day. The serene ambiance of the restaurant further enhanced our dining experience, creating a perfect setting to enjoy fresh and flavorful Japanese cuisine in the heart of Colchester.
After this exceptional dining experience at Koryu, we are eager to return and explore more of the restaurant’s enticing menu. Whether you are a Japanese cuisine enthusiast or simply seeking a culinary adventure, Koryu on Colchester’s High Street promises a memorable dining experience that tantalizes the taste buds and leaves you craving for more.
