Hospital administrators are actively exploring strategies to minimize health and safety incidents within their facilities following a rise in reported incidents over the past year. The East Suffolk and North Essex Trust (ESNEFT), which oversees Ipswich and Colchester Hospital, delved into their annual health and safety report during a recent board meeting.

Nick Sammons, the director of estates and facilities, presented the report, emphasizing the potential benefits of enhanced training to enhance the performance of the trust. Of particular concern was the report’s assessment that the trust “requires improvement” in terms of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), encompassing various substances from dust to bacteria. Sammons outlined plans to establish a dedicated group focused on addressing COSHH-related issues across the trust to ensure proper storage and utilization of hazardous substances.

Safety remains a top priority for ESNEFT, as highlighted in the report through improved attendance in training sessions and increased awareness of health and safety protocols among staff. The trust received an ‘adequate’ rating for management and first aid, while scoring ‘good’ in areas such as incident reporting, management of sharps, personal protective equipment, and information dissemination.

Despite these positive ratings, the report flagged a significant number of health and safety incidents involving medical sharps, such as needles that can cause cuts or punctures. Out of 1,399 incident reports filed between April 1 of the previous year and March 31 of the current year, 177 were related to sharps incidents, making it the second-highest reported category after incidents of violence and aggression, which totaled over 600 in the same period.

Moreover, the Health and Safety Executive received the highest number of reports related to sharp incidents, with eight reports in total, including five injuries, two releases of biological agents, and one exposure to a hazardous substance. Dr. Hussein Khatib, chair of the quality and patient safety committee, expressed concerns over the frequency of sharp-related incidents and pledged to investigate measures to reduce their occurrence.

Sammons acknowledged the escalating trend in sharp-related incidents as depicted in the annual report and stressed the importance of addressing this issue promptly.
