JD Wetherspoon recently unveiled its latest pub, The Lion & the Unicorn, at Waterloo Station in South London, following a substantial investment of £2.8 million. The interior of the pub showcases a blend of modern and industrial design elements, featuring large overhead lights hanging from the exposed ceiling, revealing structural details like pipes and ducts, giving it an urban vibe.
The flooring boasts a striking geometric patterned carpet in earthy tones, complementing the industrial feel of the space. The pub offers various seating options, including booths, high tables, and dining tables equipped with charging ports for convenience.
In terms of operations, The Lion & the Unicorn will be open from 6.30am to midnight on weekdays, extending its hours until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. On Sundays, the pub opens at 7.30am and closes at midnight. Customers can enjoy a wide selection of beverages, including real ales, traditional ciders, craft beers, and world brews, with food available throughout the day until 11pm.
Moreover, The Lion & the Unicorn aims to accommodate families, welcoming children accompanied by adults until 9pm daily. The pub’s design pays homage to The Lion and The Unicorn Pavilion, a beloved feature at the 1951 Festival of Britain. The incorporation of original drawings, sketches, historical photos, and local artwork adds a unique touch to the pub’s ambiance.
The Festival of Britain, which took place in 1951 along the South Bank, attracted millions of visitors to marvel at innovative structures like the Dome of Discovery and the Skylon. The historical significance of this event is reflected in the design of The Lion & the Unicorn, connecting it to the rich heritage of the area.
Barry Brewster, Wetherspoon’s regional manager, expressed excitement about welcoming patrons to The Lion & the Unicorn, emphasizing its potential to enhance Waterloo’s social scene. Despite recent adjustments to its pub portfolio, Wetherspoon remains committed to its growth strategy, aiming to expand its venues from 801 to 1,000 in the long run.
The opening of The Lion & the Unicorn represents not only a new addition to Wetherspoon’s establishments but also a celebration of local history and culture. With its unique design, diverse offerings, and family-friendly environment, the pub is poised to become a popular destination for both locals and visitors at Waterloo Station.
