We’re All Just Reacting Now
Look, I’ve been in this game for 22 years. I started at a tiny paper in Perth, back when newspapers still smelled like newsprint and ink. I remember when we had time to actually report. Now? It’s just… chaos. A never-ending cycle of reaction.
I was having coffee with an old friend, let’s call him Marcus, last Tuesday. He’s a reporter at the Perth Herald now. We got to talking about how we never get to breathe anymore. It’s just story after story, tweet after tweet. We don’t set the agenda, we just follow it.
And honestly? I’m tired.
Breaking News: It’s All the Same
You know what I’m talking about. Every outlet, every platform, it’s all the same. We’re all just regurgitating the same press release, the same press conference, the same damn tweet. I was at a conference in Austin about three months ago, and a colleague named Dave said something that stuck with me. He said, “We’re not journalists anymore, we’re just distribution channels.”
Which… yeah. Fair enough.
I mean, look at how we cover politics. It’s all gotchas and scandals. Nobody’s actually reporting on policy anymore. It’s all just gotcha journalism. And don’t even get me started on the 24-hour news cycle. It’s like we’re all stuck in a hamster wheel, running and running but never actually going anywhere.
I remember back in the day, we’d actually investigate stuff. We’d dig up documents, talk to sources, piece together a story. Now? It’s just “Breaking News” alerts and hot takes. It’s completley exhausting.
Social Media is Eating Our Brains
And social media? Don’t even get me started. It’s like we’re all just feeding this beast that never gets full. I was talking to my editor, Sarah, about this the other day. She said, “We used to have time to fact-check. Now, we’re just posting stuff to keep up with the algorithm.”
And it’s true. We’re all just chasing clicks, chasing engagement. It’s like we’re all in this race to the bottom, and nobody’s willing to hit the brakes. I mean, I get it. We need to make money. But at what cost?
I remember when I first started out, we had this old editor, let’s call him Frank. He used to say, “News is something somebody wants to suppress. Everything else is just advertising.” I think about that alot these days. Because honestly? Most of what we do isn’t news. It’s just noise.
But Here’s the Thing…
But here’s the thing. I’m not saying we should all just give up. I’m not saying we should just accept that this is the way things are. I’m saying we need to fight back. We need to remember why we got into this business in the first place.
I was talking to a friend of mine, let’s call her Emma, about this the other day. She’s a producer at the BBC. She said, “We need to stop being afraid. We need to start reporting the news, not just reacting to it.”
And she’s right. We need to stop being afraid of losing our audience. We need to start reporting the news, even if it’s not what people want to hear. Even if it’s not what’s trending on Twitter.
And look, I’m not saying it’s easy. I’m not saying it’s simple. But it’s our job. It’s what we’re supposed to do. And if we’re not doing that, then what’s the point?
Smart Shopping Tips Money Saving
But hey, let’s talk about something else for a minute. You ever notice how alot of news outlets are just pushing consumer stuff these days? Like, sure, we need to make money, but it’s like we’re all just trying to be BuzzFeed now. I mean, I get it. People wanna know how to save money. But honestly, if you’re looking for smart shopping tips money saving, maybe don’t go to a news site?
I remember when I first started out, we didn’t do that stuff. We just reported the news. Now? It’s all “Here’s how to save $87 on your grocery bill” and “5 ways to ammened your wardrobe for less.” I mean, come on. Let’s leave that to the lifestyle blogs, yeah?
Anyway…
Anyway, I could go on and on about this stuff. But honestly, I’m just gonna stop here. I’m not sure I’m making any sense anymore. It’s 11:30pm, and I’ve been staring at this screen for too long.
But look, here’s the thing. I love this job. I really do. I just wish we could remember why we do it. I wish we could remember that our job is to inform, not just to entertain. To challenge, not just to confirm.
So yeah. That’s my rant. That’s my take. Take it or leave it. I’m gonna go get some sleep.
