Erna Weight, a centenarian residing at The Oaks Care Home in Great Bentley, recently celebrated her 100th birthday with an abundance of joy and love. Born in Hamburg on February 10, 1925, Erna’s journey through life has been filled with resilience, determination, and a contagious smile that she believes holds the key to a long and happy life.
Growing up with four sisters and two brothers, Erna discovered her passion for millinery, the art of making women’s hats, during her youth in Gera, Germany. However, the onset of World War II brought devastation to her home, leading Erna to seek solace and a fresh start in England. It was here that she met and married Donald Weight, embarking on a journey that would shape the course of her life.
Together, Erna and Donald ventured into the hospitality industry, running a successful bed and breakfast in Glastonbury before transitioning to the world of poultry farming in Westcombe. Their daughter Christina’s arrival in 1959 brought immeasurable joy to the family, but tragedy struck when Donald fell ill and passed away in 1962. Undeterred by the challenges she faced, Erna sold the farm, relocated to Somerton with Christina, and found employment in a millinery department in Yeovil.
The resilience and adaptability that defined Erna’s character shone brightly as she navigated life’s twists and turns. In 1971, she inherited a bungalow in Holland on Sea, seizing the opportunity for a new beginning. Over the years, Erna explored various career paths, from serving as a dinner lady to embarking on adventures with her partner Eddie Jones in 1985. The couple shared a love for travel, creating cherished memories that enriched Erna’s life.
In 2012, Erna made a home in a cozy flat in Brightlingsea, where she embraced independence and cherished each day with gratitude. However, as time marched on, Erna made the decision to transition to The Oaks Care Home in 2021, a move that ensured her safety and well-being in her golden years. Surrounded by her loving family, including two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and the youngest addition, great-great-grandson Finley, Erna’s 100th birthday was a celebration of a life well-lived.
The festivities were marked by an outpouring of affection from friends, well-wishers, and even local school children who serenaded Erna with heartfelt renditions of ‘Happy Birthday’. The care home adorned the surroundings with decorations, including a prominent sign that proudly proclaimed ‘100’, a testament to Erna’s remarkable milestone. Daughter Christina Weight expressed her awe at her mother’s achievement, noting the overwhelming support and generosity from the community.
As Erna basked in the warmth of the celebrations, she shared words of wisdom that encapsulated her philosophy on life: “Be strong, be happy, and keep smiling with lots of laughter.” These simple yet profound sentiments reflect Erna’s enduring spirit and positive outlook that have guided her through a century of experiences. The staff at The Oaks Care Home echoed the sentiments of Erna’s loved ones, describing her as a delightful lady with a delightful sense of humor, a true testament to her resilience and charm.
Erna Weight’s journey from a young girl with dreams of creating beautiful hats to a centenarian surrounded by love and laughter embodies the essence of a life well-lived. Her story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience, optimism, and the enduring impact of a warm smile that transcends generations. As Erna continues to inspire those around her with her grace and strength, her legacy of love and laughter will undoubtedly endure for years to come.
