Plans to implement fines for drivers who ignore a bus lane in Colchester city center are moving forward. Essex Highways proposed installing a bus gate at Colchester bus station, specifically where Osborne Street turns into St John’s Street.
Currently, drivers are not allowed to use the left-hand lane to continue onto St John’s Street. Instead, they must use the right-hand lane to turn left into Stanwell Street or right into Vineyard Gate. Despite this rule, there are no consequences for drivers who disobey.
After a consultation, Essex County Council is considering the implementation of the bus gate to prevent unauthorized vehicles from entering Osborne Street from the junction with Stanwell Street and Vineyard Gate. The purpose of the bus gate is to improve traffic flow for public transport and enhance enforcement efforts.
During the consultation, only one objection was raised. The objector argued that cars using the area do not obstruct buses and viewed the introduction of a camera as a way to unfairly fine people. They also mentioned that they need to drive through the restricted area for business and parking purposes without causing disruptions to buses.
The council’s documents emphasize the importance of keeping bus lanes free for buses to encourage the use of public transport, reduce congestion, and minimize the environmental impact of single-use cars. A traffic survey conducted over five days in May 2022 revealed a significant number of vehicles violating the bus gate at Osborne Street, affecting bus punctuality and pedestrian safety.
To address these issues, the council plans to introduce a bus gate order and carry out highway improvements, including installing an enforcement camera to discourage unauthorized vehicles from entering Osborne Street. The decision will ultimately rest with Essex County Council.
The proposed bus gate aims to create a more efficient and safer environment for public transport users while ensuring that the rules are enforced to maintain the intended purpose of the bus lane. By addressing the challenges of bus punctuality and pedestrian safety, the development of the bus gate could lead to a more reliable and sustainable transportation system in Colchester.
