colchester-group-provides-essential-support-during-pandemic

Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the pandemic, one man’s simple act of scrolling through Facebook led to the creation of a lifeline for the vulnerable and elderly in Colchester. Peter Dutch, the founder of the ALB Community Group, recently sat down with The Gazette to reflect on the organization’s remarkable journey as they mark their fifth anniversary.

It all began on a fateful morning in March 2020, when Peter came across videos of people frantically stockpiling toilet paper. Shocked by the panic buying, he made a lighthearted comment to his wife Ann about the absurdity of it all. Little did he know that this passing remark would spark the birth of the Colchester Anti-Loo Roll Brigade, a Facebook page aimed at ensuring no one in the community went without essential supplies during the crisis.

From its humble beginnings, the ALB Community Group has blossomed into a beacon of hope for Colchester residents in need. Not only did they provide crucial support during the pandemic, but they also extended their helping hand to orphanages in Poland and refugees from war-torn Ukraine. Renamed as The ALB, the organization now calls the Lakelands Centre in Stanway their headquarters and community hub, a central hub for their wide-ranging initiatives.

Under Peter’s leadership, along with his dedicated team including his wife as the café manager, ALB director Alisha Joseph, and chief marketing officer Scott Grant, the group has expanded their reach and impact. Beyond supporting victims of abuse, providing respite for caregivers, and offering therapy for children, they have become a driving force behind initiatives that secure furniture for those in need and much more.

As Peter reflects on the group’s journey, he expresses immense pride in what they have accomplished over the past five years. What started as a simple desire to support the vulnerable and elderly has grown into a thriving organization that positively impacts countless lives. The unexpected success of The ALB is a testament to the power of community support and generosity, which continues to fuel their growth and impact in Colchester.

In a celebration of their fifth anniversary, The ALB will be hosting their annual ALB Festival on September 13 and 14, featuring pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor as the headlining act in Lower Castle Park. This event not only marks a milestone for The ALB but also serves as a tribute to the incredible community spirit that has propelled their work forward.

Peter acknowledges that none of their achievements would have been possible without the unwavering support of the Colchester community. From the kindness of individuals to the generosity of local businesses, the success of The ALB is a testament to the collective spirit of the city. As they continue to flourish and make a positive impact, Peter recognizes the privilege of being part of a community that stands together in times of need.

As The ALB looks ahead to the future, their commitment to serving the community remains unwavering. With a dedicated team and a growing list of initiatives, they are poised to continue their mission of providing essential support and uplifting those in need. The impact of The ALB is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with compassion and determination.
