A new and innovative heat network system is set to transform the way businesses and homes in Plymouth are heated. The city is part of the government’s Heat Network Zoning Pilot, with plans underway for the first phase of this groundbreaking project. Heat networks, also known as district heating, distribute heat from a central source to buildings through a network of underground pipes carrying hot water. This eliminates the need for individual gas boilers or electric heaters in each building, creating a more efficient and environmentally friendly heating solution.
The initial phase of the project, with an external funding of up to £60m, aims to connect major buildings in the city center to the waterfront. The proposal will be presented to the cabinet for approval on Monday, September 9th. Cllr Tom Briars-Delve, the cabinet member for the environment and climate change, expressed the importance of being proactive in addressing the climate emergency by implementing bold initiatives like this heat network system. He highlighted the potential benefits of the project, not only in terms of heating efficiency but also in creating green jobs and supporting skills development in the construction sector.
The masterplan for Plymouth’s heat network outlines two main zones. The first zone will focus on the southern and western areas of the city, utilizing waste heat from sources such as the South West Water Central Plant and the Devonport Energy from Waste facility. The second zone, planned for Derriford in the north, will tap into waste heat from the NHS medical waste incinerator and expand heating and cooling services in the area. While the initial phase targets business and commercial buildings, there are future plans to extend the network to include social and other types of housing.
Pending approval from the cabinet, the council aims to seek a development partner and apply for the Green Heat Network Fund to finance the first phase of the project. This initiative represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly heating solution for Plymouth.
